Wednesday, March 9: CHAPTER 10 / CHAPTER 2
CLASSWORK:
Today class started with Mr. Clark handing out the materials needed for Chapter 2. STUDENTS WHO WERE AWAY, MUST GET THESE FROM MR. CLARK ASAP.
Next, as a class, we reviewed the key concepts from Chapter 10 using the study guide.
Students then wrote their Chapter 10 Test.
Mr. Clark offered the rest of the period to read Chapter 2 and to complete as many questions as possible.
HOMEWORK:
Complete Chapter 2 Questions # 1-12 for Thursday, March 10.

Tuesday, March 8: CHAPTER 10
CLASSWORK:
Today, class started with a discussion about public policy and lobbying. We discussed the roles of lobbyists, and how pressure groups and individuals can influence government decisions.
Next we discussed the idea of civil disobedience, using Rosa Parks, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr & the protest at Tiananmen Square as examples of practitioners of civil disobedience.
We then watched a video of the Tiananmen Square protest, and discussed how civil disobedience can get results, as well as the risks and sacrifices that must be understood before engaging in this course of action.
Next we wrote Chapter 10 Homework Quizzes C & D (which we later marked). We then clarified the answers to the remainder of Chapter 10 Questions # 27-44.
HOMEWORK:
No formal homework assigned today; however, students are reminded that they have their Chapter 10 Test tomorrow (Wed, March 9).

Wednesday, March 2 - CHAPTER 10
CLASSWORK:
Today in class, we started by reminding those with outstanding assignments that since it is the first of the month, they will be expected in homework club until their assignments / tests are all caught up.
Next, students were given the "Canada at the Polls - Definitions Homework Quiz" which we later marked as a class. Students who missed the quiz will have to write it upon their return.
Next, Mr. Clark walked the class through a diagram (on the board) which connected all of the terms (from the quiz) and where they fit into the election process.
Mr. Clark then divided the class into groups, and each were given a scrambled set of items that would occur during an election. Their job was to put the items into the proper chronological order as quickly as possible.
**STUDENTS WHO WERE AWAY CAN TRY THIS AS WELL BY GOING TO CHAPTER 10 MATERIALS PAGE OF THE WEBSITE AND LOOKING AT THE HANDOUT TITLED, "ELECTION - ORDER OF OPERATIONS". PLEASE CHECK THE KEY (WHICH IS ON THE SAME PAGE ON THE WEBSITE) AFTER YOU TRY TO PUT THESE IN ORDER YOURSELF.

Mr. Clark took this opportunity to explain his test correcting policy. Students who complete corrections FOLLOWING THE POLICY TO THE LETTER WITHIN 1 WEEK OF HAVING HAD THEIR TEST RETURNED, will receive extra credit.
Next, students were asked to complete all definitions WITH A STAR BESIDE THEM on the green handout titled, "Canada at the Polls: Find-a-Word". Tomorrow, there will be a quiz on these terms, and students who have them completed, will be able to have their completed definitions on their desk (open book style).

Today, Mr. Clark started class by reminding students that their political parties assignments are due this Friday, March 4.
He then reminded students that as per the school policy for missing work, any students who are missing assignments as of tomorrow (March 1) will be expected in homework club every day it is offered until they are completely caught up.
Next we did a brief overview lesson on how citizens can influence government decisions. Topics such as elections, public opinion polls, pressure groups, lobbyists, and civil disobedience were covered.
We then read the textbook, P. 249-251 (Introduction, Choosing the Government, Elections and Election Campaigns).
Next, we looked at the overhead titled, "Sample Ballot Marks" and learned how ballots must be properly marked to be counted.

Today, class started with Mr. Clark reading and clarifying the "Political Parties Assignment" with the class.
Special care was taken to ensure that students read and understood the attached information pertaining to plagiarism and to the consequences that would be applied if anyone was guilty of a blatant lack of academic integrity.
Students were given the rest of the period to research for this assignment in the computer lab.

Tuesday, February 23 - CHAPTER 9

Today's class was a preparation class for tomorrow's Chapter 9 Test.
First, Mr. Clark played four videos for the class, each can be accessed through the website under Chapter 9 Materials. The videos are titled:

First, Mr. Clark played four videos for the class, each can be accessed through the website under Chapter 9 Materials. The videos are titled:
- Govt of Canada - Structure
- Intro to the House of Commons
- Parliament of Canada - The Senate
- Govt of Canada - Making a Law
Next, Mr. Clark demonstrated how students ought to be using their study guide - like a checklist where they would see what needs to be known, ask if they know this material, and if not, look it over using the locations Mr. Clark has provided to find this information (to avoid having to search for it).
We then went through the entire Chapter 9 Study Guide, and reviewed all of the material.
For the final 25 minutes of class, Mr. Clark divided the class into teams, and we played a trivia game - where students were asked questions, pertaining to Chapter 9 material. The class performed very well, and Mr. Clark is hopeful that all students will be successful on their Chapter 9 Test tomorrow.
HOMEWORK:
No homework was assigned today; however, students are reminded to continue to prepare for their Chapter 9 Test tomorrow.

CLASSWORK:
Today, class started with Mr. Clark asking if students had any difficulty answering any of the Chapter 9 Questions. We went over those with which students needed assistance.
Next, we reviewed the roles of the MP, Senate, and Cabinet, and the roles of the Governor General.
As all of these people are involved in the legislative (law making) process we reviewed this process in detail.
With the aforementioned in mind, the class divided into groups and completed the mini group assignment from the overhead assignment titled, "Proposing a New Law".
Students were given the remainder of the class to finish this.
HOMEWORK:
Those students who were unable to complete the "Proposing a New Law" assignment in class, were asked to complete it and submit it by tomorrow (Tuesday, February 23).
Students were reminded that their Chapter 9 Test would be administered on Wednesday, February 24.

- We also looked at text P. 231-233 "Is the Senate Worth Keeping?" and discussed key points and arguements.
- We then looked at the overhead handout titled, "Role of the Senate", and learned about Senators - how they secure their positions, who is eligible to sit in the Senate, and the roles and responsibilities of Senators.
- Next, we discussed and reviewed the process of how laws are made (this info can be found on P. 236-240 of the Textbook and in Mr. Clark's overhead handouts titled, "How a Bill Becomes a Law", and "Passage of a Bill in Parliament".
- We then read and clarified the assignment on the handout titled, "Senate - Yes, No or Maybe".
- Students were provided the remainder of the class to complete the assignment titled, "Senate - Yes, No or Maybe".

We then discussed and clarified the small assignment titled, "The Role of the MP".
Students were provided with the remainder of the class to complete this assignment.

Today in class we discussed the various Ideologies, the Ideological Spectrum and the factors that contribute to each taking its place on the political spectrum.

- Do you support public or private business ownership?
- Do you feel that humans will do what is best for society without policing and strict government structure?
- Do you believe in economic freedom (people are free to earn as they are able) or economic equality (everyone gets equal slice of the pie)?
- Do you support democracy or dictatorship?
We then discussed the results of our survey from yesterday using the handout titled, "Where Do You Fit in the Political Spectrum?" and discussed the results.

Tuesday, February 2 - IDEOLOGIES UNIT
CLASSWORK:
The purpose of today's class was to introduce Ideologies, and to have students recognize that these are basically groupings of people who share similar values and beliefs.

The purpose of today's class was to introduce Ideologies, and to have students recognize that these are basically groupings of people who share similar values and beliefs.
- First Mr. Clark collected the "Website Navigation Homework Quizzes from the students
- The lesson started with an exercise intended to help students learn to formulate opinions based on facts and their own value sets. We did this using a continuum exercise on whether marijuana should be legal. As benefits and drawbacks of this idea were introduced and discussed, students were encouraged to adjust their thoughts based on their new knowledge of the topic.
- Mr Clark then used the overhead (handed out to students) titled, "Political Spectrum" to show the 5 Ideologies we need to know, and where they fit on the spectrum.
- The class then completed the questionnaire on the handout titled, "Political Spectrum - Where do you Fit?"
HOMEWORK:

CLASSWORK:
- Today, Mr. Clark bombarded his poor students with all kinds of information on policies and expectations. Though these were presented in a fun way, they are critical for success in this course.
- Items discussed include:

- Test Correcting Policy
- Policy on Late Assignments and Missed Tests
- Please familiarize yourselves with all three of these. Understanding how to navigate and use the website is critical. Understanding the other two policies will be helpful for sure, but not likely as critical.
- Parents are encouraged to use the site to check grades, monitor progress, and check upcoming due dates and test dates
HOMEWORK:
- Students were asked to complete the "Website Navigation Quiz" (found on the home page of my Social Studies 11 Site in the center column of buttons (near the bottom). These are to be finished for tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2)
